The current corona crisis often invites us to make ourselves really comfortable – watching series or finally working through the pile of unread books are currently among our favorite pastimes. What very few of us know: At the moment exercise is more important than ever!

Sport is healthy and keeps you fit – that much is clear! Especially in the Corona crisis, we should overcome our weaker self more often and get up to more exercise. Why it is like that? We’ll tell you.

A global study by the University of Potsdam, in which 6,300 test persons in 52 countries were interviewed, examined how sport affects our general well-being in everyday corona life. The results were clear: Whether jogging, home workouts or walks – those who did not do any sport before the Corona crisis are now moving even less. According to the initiator of the study, Professor Ralf Brand, exercise is more important than ever. In those who are physically more active, a significantly more positive well-being could be measured than in those who do no sport. After all, sport is not only good for the body, but also for the soul!

Corona lockdown: This is how we keep moving now

The gyms are closed, the Zumba class is also not allowed to take place – anyone who is now frustrated on the couch is making a serious mistake. After all, there are so many other ways to keep moving! It is best if you exercise in the fresh air. It also strengthens the immune system and helps reduce stress. But be careful: It doesn’t matter whether you prefer cycling, jogging or walking – choose a sport in which you feel safe and do not overexert yourself. Even if the current situation requires a certain rethinking, you should not rush into a completely foreign sport. This increases the risk of injury!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has put together some more tips on staying active at home during lockdown:

  • On foot: If possible, walk as much as possible. Use your lunch break for a short walk, go to the supermarket or walk up and down while talking on the phone.
  • Getting up often: Sitting for long periods in the home office is not good for us and especially for our backs. In order to relieve our lumbar spine, they stand up briefly every 30 minutes. It’s best to set a timer to remind them.
  • Online courses: Your sports program does not have to be canceled during the Corona crisis, as many fitness studios are now offering their courses online.
  • Active housework: Whether cleaning windows, gardening or playing with the children – all these activities keep us moving at home.
