THIS is what you should consider before buying a weighted blanket
Weighted or therapy blankets have long been in demand in Sweden when it comes to sleep disorders of any kind. We too are slowly but surely discovering the benefits of weighted blankets. Compared to conventional duvets, weighted or therapy blankets are significantly heavier – and that is what makes them so successful. The weight and light pressure have a calming and relaxing effect that has a significant impact on the quality of our sleep. But in order for these positive effects to occur, the right weight and size as well as the material are crucial when buying a weighted blanket:
Note weight and size
A therapy blanket should always be tailored to your body weight and should be around 10-15 percent of your own body weight. An example: A person who weighs between 70 and 89 kilograms should choose a therapy blanket (135 cm x 200 cm) of around 8 kg. For a larger blanket, for example 150 x 220 cm, the blanket should be heavier and weigh around 10 kg. Your blanket shouldn’t be wider than your bed, otherwise it can easily end up hanging off the edge of the bed.
Take a look at the material
In order to enable the best possible sleep, the choice of materials and filling is also crucial. You should therefore ask yourself the following questions before making a purchase:
- What fabrics are the blankets made of?
- Are the fabrics natural and breathable?
- Is the duvet filled with down or with plant-based fibers such as cotton?
- Is your blanket a cooling or warming model?
If you are unsure, it is best to seek advice from a specialist shop before buying. If you order your blanket online, you should read the product descriptions beforehand. Practical: Some providers also offer tests on their website that help to find the right model.
