Celery juices, ginger shots and chlorophyll drinks – the range of wellness drinks is wide. What they all have in common is that they are good for our body with the help of numerous vitamins and minerals.
However, we have not yet heard a nice-sounding name in the list of healthy drinks – and that is Jamu Kunyit Asam. That sounds like wanderlust! And indeed, the glowing orange drink can look back on a 1,400-year history that originated in Bali.
The main ingredients of Jamu Kunyit Asam are turmeric, ginger, tamarind and cinnamon.
Tolfioow was able to speak to Stephanie Arnold. The founder of bala kitchen brought the golden elixir, as she affectionately calls it, to Germany.

“That really touched me”
“I was entrusted with the recipe by a healer about 3 years ago, because my health was really bad at the time. I’ve had MS for over 30 years and that was when I had my last flare-up. I only received the recipe with the at the same time promising to travel to Bali and learn the Jamu teachings from scratch,” she tells us in an interview. During her stay in Bali, she was able to immerse herself in the more than 2,000-year-old healing theory, she continues.
“Moreover, I received a clear mandate to practice it in my home country. My dear friend Ketut – she is a Gendong in Ubud – said: ‘You are Miss Jamu of Europe.’ It really touched me. Initially, I brewed Jamu Kunyit Asam for myself, my family and my friends.”
The response to Jamu Kunyit Asam was overwhelming
However, the response was so great that she wanted to reach more people with Jamu Kunyit Asam and saw it as a business idea.
“In November 2019, with the help of a friend, I opened a small online shop , Right from the start we had many orders, which did not level off even during the Corona period – on the contrary! What makes me particularly happy is that that we almost exclusively have regular customers. But that doesn’t surprise me either. If you have a Jamu Kunyit Asam in your life, you don’t want to be without it anymore.”
The health effects set in quickly, says Arnold, who is also a trained Ayurveda food coach.
“My mom, who has been suffering from osteoarthritis for years and could hardly move her hands, is now pain-free and has no restrictions in her hands at all. My landlady, who is 75 years old, could no longer walk down the stairs without grabbing the banister to hold on and take step by step. Today she walks down the stairs as normal. I could tell dozens more wonderful stories like this,” enthuses Stephanie Arnold.
“Where nature can heal, you should let it”
In her opinion, the healing effect of Jamu Kunyit Asam is no coincidence:
“I am firmly convinced that our nature has almost everything ready so that we can heal ourselves. Of course, conventional medicine has its justification and is immensely important. But where nature can heal, you should also let it.”
Incidentally, bala means in Sanskrit: power, courage, perseverance, strength and power. And that’s exactly what we wish for Stephanie Arnold!
