Vitamin D is essential for our body. With a low vitamin D level or deficiency, it is therefore advisable to supplement the so-called sun vitamin. But how quickly is the defect actually remedied?
With the help of sunlight, we can produce vitamin D ourselves, which we need for our bone health and our immune system, among other things. In the cold season, many people have low levels of vitamin D due to the lack of sunlight.
Typical symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency are one
- higher susceptibility to infection,
- Fatigue,
- muscle weakness or bone pain.Children can get rickets — a condition in which the bones are soft and misshapen.
To remedy a vitamin D deficiency, you can supplement the sunshine vitamin in the form of tablets or drops. Never take vitamin D on your own, but have your vitamin D level determined with a blood test beforehand. In consultation with your doctor, he can prescribe the right preparations for you and inform you accordingly about the dosage. Incorrect, especially excessive intake or an incorrect combination of vitamin D can sometimes cause an overdose , which manifests itself in gastrointestinal complaints, cardiac arrhythmia or headaches, among other things.

Vitamin D deficiency: how quickly is the deficiency corrected?
How quickly your deficiency can be remedied depends on how low your vitamin level is. The more severe your deficiency, the longer it will take to bring levels back to normal (40 and 80 ng/ml). First, you will be supplementing with high-dose vitamin D for a short period of time. With a very low vitamin D value, up to 10,000 IU (= International Units) per day are possible. This amount increases the vitamin in the blood by about 1 ng/ml. To keep your level constant, continue to take a lower dose afterwards, 1,000 IU is recommended. After about four weeks, your doctor should check whether the vitamin D target value has been reached. If this is not the case, it makes sense to calculate the dosage again.
In order to avoid a deficiency in the dark season as best as possible, you should soak up the sun for 10-15 minutes every day at midday from April to September. The following applies here: The lighter the skin type, the shorter the skin must be exposed to UVB rays.

Vitamin D in combination with vitamin K2
Always take vitamin D in combination with vitamin K2 as it activates proteins that are essential for the utilization of calcium. This ensures that calcium is transported from the blood and stored in the bones and teeth. In addition, vitamin K2 prevents calcium from settling as a deposit in the artery walls.
