1. The swimming pool smells strongly of chlorine
If the smell of chlorine is unpleasantly strong as soon as you enter the swimming pool, you should consider changing the pool. The reason behind this is simple: the odorless chemical is used in swimming pools for disinfection . When combined with urea, which comes from urine and sweat, this acrid odor is created. This means that the more intense the smell, the more urea is in the water. The resulting trichloramine is harmless to healthy people, but can cause shortness of breath and eye irritation in asthmatics.
2. The floor is greasy
If the tiles in the swimming pool feel slippery, this is not a good sign. A slippery bottom usually indicates bacteria that are in the water. These occur when the water has not been adequately disinfected. If you notice a greasy floor, report it to the pool staff. Accidents can thus be prevented.
3. The water looks cloudy
Cloudy water can have different causes. In outdoor pools, pollen , dust , and washed -off sunscreen can make the water appear dirty. If the water is very cloudy, defective filter systems can also be to blame. If in doubt, pass your suspicions on to the pool staff.
4. Red and burning eyes
If there is too much sweat, urine and other dirt particles in the water, these substances react with the chlorine. The dirty water can irritate the mucous membranes and eyes. Normally, the red and itchy eyes disappear after a few hours. But if they last for several days, you should see a doctor. The water may have washed bacteria or a foreign object into your eye.
5. Unclean drains and filter systems
Take a close look at the water inlets and outlets, as these can provide initial indications of the condition of the filter system. If covers and flaps are missing or if the drains look dirty and rusty, you should report this and avoid the pool. Broken systems can lead to serious accidents due to strong suction .
