Things that happen when you eat whole grain bread every day

Bread is one of the most consumed foods of all. Wholemeal bread in particular is becoming more and more popular – and rightly so, because it is much healthier than white flour products due to the higher nutrient content. Regular consumption can even have a positive effect on our health. We explain what 4 things happen when you eat whole grain bread every day.

Bread is one of the most popular foods and is on the daily menu for many people in Germany. According to the Gesellschaft für Verbraucherforschung (GfK), for example, around 1,681,000 tons of bread were bought by private households in 2018. But bread is not just bread – because there are big differences in terms of the nutrients it contains. In contrast to white flour products, whole grain bread is much healthier and provides us with important vitamins and minerals such as B vitamins, magnesium and potassium . Regular consumption can even have a positive effect on our health.

These 3 things happen when you eat whole grain bread every day

1. Whole grain bread supports healthy digestion

Especially people who have problems with digestion and suffer from constipation or a sluggish intestine should eat whole grain bread more often. This is because it is rich in fiber, which contributes to healthy digestion. Fiber, of which whole grain bread contains an average of 6 grams per 100 grams, swells up in the intestine and thus ensures that the intestinal contents are excreted more quickly.

2. You lose weight more easily

When dieting, should you absolutely avoid bread? This applies to white flour products, because although they are relatively high in calories, they are low in nutrients, slow down digestion and do not keep you full for long. The opposite is the case with wholemeal bread: in contrast to white flour, wholemeal flour consists of healthy, long-chain carbohydrates, which only cause the blood sugar level to rise slowly and keep it constant for longer – as a result, we are full for longer.

3. Whole grain bread can reduce the risk of various diseases

In addition, eating whole grains like whole wheat bread can reduce the risk of various medical conditions. A review by Harvard University  evaluated twelve studies from different countries. The result: subjects who consumed 48 grams of whole grain products daily had a 25 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. The risk of dying from cancer fell by 14 percent. Another review study came to similar conclusions. According to the scientists, the consumption of whole grain products has a positive effect on blood lipid levels, blood pressure and weight, which explains the results of the study.

4. Your brain is supported

On top of that, regular consumption of whole grain bread can have a positive effect on your powers of thought and concentration. How well we can concentrate depends to a large extent on what we eat. In order to function properly, our brain needs energy, which wholemeal bread provides through complex, long-chain carbohydrates. Here you can find out which other  7 foods support the brain >>

Whole grain: Not always healthy

Despite their health benefits, whole grains are not recommended for everyone. For example, people with gluten intolerance or celiac disease can develop health problems such as abdominal pain or diarrhea after eating the gluten they contain. In addition, some experts criticize that whole grain products contain starch, which can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly. According to the AOK , substances such as phytic acid and lectins are also suspected of having harmful effects on health.
