The best pick-me-ups: ginger
Ginger stimulates metabolism and circulation. This is due to the essential oils from the tuber and its pungent substances shogaol and gingerol. Ginger water can be enjoyed hot or cold and is easy to make yourself: Pour hot water over 5-6 slices of unpeeled fresh ginger (preferably organic) per cup and let steep for 20 minutes. Even easier: Add 30-40 drops of ginger essence to 1/2 l of hot or cold water (e.g. “GingerPure”, available in pharmacies).
The best pick-me-ups: fresh air
Flood your body with oxygen and you’ll instantly feel much fresher. If possible, go outside for a moment or at least open the window and take a few deep breaths in and out slowly. Your head will clear up quickly and you’ll be able to focus a lot better.
The best pick-me-ups: vitamins
Many instinctively reach for chocolate or dextrose to get energy quickly. Glucose, which is glucose, goes straight into the blood and increases performance – but only for a very short time. After that, the blood sugar level drops even more and the sluggishness returns. In the long term, you are better off eating plenty of fruit and vegetables every day (three handfuls of vegetables, two handfuls of fruit, as fresh as possible) in order to automatically supply yourself with all the important vitamins. Then you are also better protected against stress and the energy level does not drop as quickly.
The best pick-me-ups: Mint
A US study examined the effects of peppermint and cinnamon on drivers. Result: A quick sniff of it, and exhausted drivers became more attentive and lively again. The essential oils stimulate the central nervous system. Of course, you can also take advantage of the effect outside of road traffic, e.g. B. by chewing a piece of peppermint gum. British researchers were recently able to demonstrate its refreshing effect, which goes beyond good breath.
The best pick-me-ups: light
In the dark season, the body often lacks the feel-good transmitter serotonin, which is increasingly released in daylight. In return, more melatonin is formed, which we also call the sleep hormone for good reason. Natural light is one of our most important suppliers of energy. Because it’s still a while before spring is fully here, you can do a little trick in the meantime: fill up in front of a special lamp (e.g. “EnergyUp White” from Philips, available in specialist shops). 20-30 minutes a day are enough – also on the side at work or at home – to provide yourself with the amount of light that is otherwise only available in summer.
The best pick-me-ups: massage
Ideal if you just have a sag: Knead the neck area vigorously with your fingertips for two minutes or use the hedgehog ball (photo) to move over the area. This also works over clothing. Then massage the ears from the edge to the earlobes with thumb and forefinger for about a minute. Painful tension is relieved and the blood circulation gets going again. Another Fitmacher acupressure point is in the top joint crease of the little finger. Press firmly with your thumb or thumbnail for up to 30 seconds.
