In the past few years, the skin care product space has featured the ingredient niacinamide, which is being used in more and more creams and serums. Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3. We can absorb vitamin B3 through food, for example in the form of fish or eggs, but it also makes sense to get it through the skin. Niacinamide is water soluble, which is why it is mainly used in water-based personal care products. 

Niacinamide: How the ingredient works on the skin

Vitamin B3 fulfills many important functions in our body. Among other things, it has an anti-inflammatory effect, protects our skin from free radicals and stimulates the formation of collagen and elastin in the skin, which counteracts skin aging. Niacinamide as an ingredient in care products provides moisture, supports the skin’s barrier function and regulates sebum production. In this way, pores can be reduced and wrinkles and pigment spots reduced. Due to its effect, niacinamide is used for both dry and impure skin , for pigment spots and to prevent skin aging . Thanks to the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect, the ingredient can also be used for acne.

How is niacinamide used?

Niacinamide should be used twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening. The ingredient protects the skin throughout the day and helps to regenerate the skin at night. The concentration of niacinamide in skin care products should neither be too high nor too low – between 2 and 5 percent is best for beginners. Those whose skin is already used to niacinamide can also use 10 percent. In rare cases, skin problems may initially worsen after the first use, but these should improve quickly.
