Summer time is also insect time. The bites of the little animals can itch and hurt. So that they don’t sting in the first place, there is a large selection of so-called repellents, better known as anti-insect agents, in the drugstore. Most of them are a real chemical club with unpronounceable ingredients that we don’t like to have on our skin or even breathe in. That’s why we’ve prepared three foolproof recipes for bug spray using natural ingredients.

Lemon against mosquitoes
ingredients
- 1 lemon
- lemon oil
- 1 packet of baking powder
- spray bottle
That’s how it’s done:
Squeeze the lemon and mix the juice with 4 to 5 drops of lemon oil. Add the baking soda and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. The spray is more suitable for the evening hours, as the lemon makes the skin sensitive to light and sunburn occurs more quickly. The spray keeps for about three days in the fridge.
Herbs against flies
ingredients
- fresh or dried herbs such as mint, lavender, cloves, lemongrass, and cat grass
- boiling water
- 1/2 cup witch hazel water (pharmacy)
- spray bottle
That’s how it’s done:
Add 3 to 4 teaspoons, preferably a combination of herbs, of the above herbs to boiling water. Let the mixture boil for two minutes and then remove the pot from the heat. Allow the water to cool to hand-warmth. Then pour off the brew and put it in a spray bottle. Top this up with half a cup of witch hazel water from the pharmacy. The spray will keep in the fridge for several weeks.
This also helps against insects
You can also use these tricks to keep insects away:
- It doesn’t always have to be a spray – a bowl of scented oil can also help to drive away mosquitoes and the like! Scents such as lavender, tea tree, peppermint and lemon are particularly suitable for this.
- LED lamps are not only more environmentally friendly, they also repel insects from us! Insects react more to bluish light than to reddish light colors.
- Plants such as rosemary, marigolds and basil also serve to ward off insects.
- Cinnamon oil also has a deterrent effect on the little pests. Just drizzle a little bit into a bowl and put it on the table.
- Mosquitoes in particular are attracted by sweat – so take a good shower! But beware: It is better to avoid strongly perfumed shower gels . They can quickly do the opposite.
- Anyone who lights ground coffee on a fireproof surface is also in peace.
