HEALTH:

What can I do against my spring tiredness?

Gesine A., Dusseldorf

Most people feel like you between March and May. You feel listless, unfocused and less productive. This is due to the tiring “winter hormone” melatonin, which should actually be produced less now. The “feel good messenger” serotonin gives you a boost, and you can stimulate its formation: with plenty of sunlight and bright colors. So get rid of those dark winter clothes, get out every day and fill up on light! Squats with the window open, walking and going for walks also combat tiredness and also work against winter fat. Get your vitamin balance in order: Eat light foods rich in vitamins and drink enough, preferably water and spritzers. After all, a lot of healthy sleep also helps to make the body fit for spring.

NOURISHMENT:

Does microwave cooking affect the health benefits of food?

Rebekka R., Bad Schwartau

That depends on the substances. The heat-insensitive vitamin E is largely preserved in the microwave, while the vitamin C loss is up to 70 percent, depending on the type of fruit and vegetable. Secondary plant substances are almost completely destroyed in the microwave. Therefore, do not use the microwave as the only cooking method.

BEAUTY:

I have a stubborn nail fungus. Does the nail have to be removed?

Jochen B., Obersdorf

Nail removal, formerly common for stubborn nail fungus, is now considered an outdated method. Doctors today successfully treat nail fungus with medication: In the case of a mild fungal infestation, you have to apply certain varnishes and solutions to the nail regularly over a longer period of time. For a very stubborn fungus, your dermatologist can prescribe tablets to treat the fungus from the inside as well. You would then have to take these for several months.

ENVIRONMENT:

Aren’t normal washing-up liquids also biodegradable? Or should I better buy eco products?

Corinna B., Rheda-Wiedenbrück

All detergents contain surfactants, which is what the washing-active substances are called. They have to be 100% biodegradable. This does not apply to possible additives. Eco products are largely made from renewable raw materials (plants). This does not mean, however, that they pollute the water bodies less. The most environmentally friendly are detergent concentrates, of which you only need a splash for the rinsing water.

HEALTH:

I often have bleeding gums. Is that bad?

Katrin K., Bergheim

Bleeding gums occur when the body goes through hormonal changes or with certain diseases, such as the thyroid or liver. But don’t worry: the cause is usually harmless. A dentist appointment will clarify, maybe you just have gum inflammation. If brushing your teeth is painful, myrrh rinses can help.
