Here’s the book:
Losing a few pounds in everyday life sounds easy at first, until finally doing without some foods takes the fun out of it and we quickly fall back into old habits. Güldane Altekrüger from Hamburg did not want to do without anything during her fight against the pregnancy kilos. This is how the bestseller “Weight Loss with Bread and Cake” came about. Tolfioow spoke to the Hamburg native about her book and its success.
This is how losing weight with bread and cake works
Tolfioow: How did you come up with the idea of baking alternatives to conventional bread and cakes?
Güldane Altekrüger: Like many women, I gained a few kilos during pregnancy. I tried all diets to get rid of it. However, none of them suited me because I was always missing something. Especially bread and cakes. Then I thought to myself that there had to be a different way. So I stood in the kitchen and started trying. I shared my first baking creations in my Weight Watchers group. The group then came up with the idea that I should get an Instagram and Facebook account.
Tolfioow: What happened next on Instagram? How did the big breakthrough come about?
Altekrüger : Since March 2018 I also have an account on Instagram and Facebook. Word of my idea got around pretty quickly at Weight Watchers, so I got more and more followers in a very short time. My community now has 45,400 followers and it’s growing every day. I get a lot of great messages with a lot of positive feedback from my followers every day. At some point the question arose whether there would be a book of my recipes or whether I could publish one. Since I was in the middle of parental leave and changing jobs at the time, I tried to design my own book with a social media course and some Photoshop. After many nights of hard work it was finished. I just had to sell it somehow. As a small no-name author, I quickly founded my own publishing house and opened an Amazon account. The biggest surprise then was when the book shot to #1 on the bestseller list overnight. I sold all 1000 books in the first three days and Amazon blocked my account as it was a bit unusual. The account was quickly unlocked so that I could sell books again. Since then, progress has been made every day and the demand for the book and especially for the recipes does not decrease.
On her Instagram account “diewoelckchenbaeckerei” Güldane Altekrüger regularly shows her new creations and how she manages to lose weight.
Tolfioow: What is particularly important to you when developing recipes?
Altekrüger : Above all, it has to be a healthier and lower-calorie alternative than, for example, conventional chocolate cake. And it has to taste good! It’s also important to me that it’s quick, so it can be easily integrated into everyday life and that you don’t need countless ingredients for the recipes.
Tolfioow: How do you go about developing it?
Altekrüger : My biggest inspiration are my own desires. If I feel like chocolate cream, I’d rather get in the kitchen and develop my own than fall back on the conventional ones from the supermarket. I also regularly get suggestions for new recipes from my followers. Sometimes I also think about what ingredients I could try out in front of the kitchen shelf, in the drugstore or in the health food store. Depending on the baking creation, this will take a different amount of time. Some cakes turn out right the first time, but bread and rolls sometimes don’t turn out because they just don’t have the fluffiness.
Tolfioow: How will things continue after the great success?
Altekrüger : A second book is definitely being planned. In addition, our YouTube channel will start on April 11th, 2019 and I will go on a reading tour in numerous cities.
