Know these sun myths about skin

Together with a Nivea expert, we uncovered the five most persistent sun myths. If you are aware of this, you can enjoy the sun to the fullest!

The sun comes out, warms us with its rays and we immediately feel much happier. Of course we feel like going outside. Whether at the sea or in the mountains, on holiday at home or on the Italian beach, we always have to protect our skin . So that we can do this effectively, we are finally uncovering widespread sun myths and revealing what is really behind them.

Solarium visits prepare the skin for the sun

When you go to the sunbed, your skin is mainly exposed to UVA light. However, it is the UVB rays that activate the skin’s own protection, namely via the natural thickening of the horny layer and melanin synthesis. Intense UVA radiation leads to faster, temporary pigmentation. However, they also penetrate into deeper layers and therefore cause the skin to age faster due to the sun. In addition, these rays increase the risk of skin allergies. You should therefore not do without sun protection during your vacation, despite previous visits to the solarium.

Once your skin is tanned, it’s okay not to use sunscreen

Even if your skin is already tanned, it only has a low level of self-protection. Although you can reduce your SPF a little after a while, you should definitely not do without sun protection. If you have sensitive skin, you should always opt for a very high sun protection factor. It is therefore important to pay attention to your skin type and holiday location when choosing sun protection.

With SPF 20 you can stay in the sun 20 times as long

This calculation is theoretically correct. However, the sun protection factor specified on the bottle is only guaranteed if you have applied enough lotion to your skin . You should also renew your sunscreen every two hours – even after swimming.

Can’t estimate how much sunscreen is enough? Then we have a little tip: use a teaspoon as a guide! One teaspoon is enough for the face and six for the body.

Exercise makes you tan faster

While you won’t tan faster if you keep moving, your body will tan evenly. If you lie on your stomach or back, only one side of your body will turn brown. If you go hiking, climbing or playing beach volleyball, your body will turn the same brown on all sides.

With a high sun protection factor, the skin does not turn brown

That’s not true! Even with a sunscreen with a very high SPF, your skin will tan, it just takes a little longer. The higher the SPF, the better your skin is protected from sunburn. And she stays tan longer. Would you like to tan quickly despite high SPF? Just reach for a sunscreen with a tanning effect. They stimulate melanin production and your skin gets a really nice holiday tan.
