Every year around the same time, we put women in the spotlight. Because then everything revolves around equal rights for women and girls in many countries around the world. 26 countries have even declared the officially named “United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and World Peace” as a public holiday.
The origin of International Women ‘s Day is no longer clearly comprehensible. What is certain, however, is that it was officially celebrated for the first time on March 19, 1911 in Germany, Denmark, Austria-Hungary and Switzerland. Since the day before the fallen of the March Revolution of 1848 is commemorated, this date should give International Women’s Day a symbolic character. After the date was pushed back to May 12 a few years later, March 8 became the global Women’s Day from 1921. The trigger is said to have been a strike by working women in Saint Petersburg, which ultimately led to the February Revolution.
“Our Day” has a specific motto every year . Also in 2013 the motto is ” Set a sign today for tomorrow” . Even today, it still serves as an opportunity to discuss equal rights for women. However, opinions on this subject are divided. While politicians are particularly concerned with women’s rights on this day, women’s rights activist Alice Schwarzer has something to say about this holiday. In 2010, she even called for the abolition of the day in the “Frankfurter Rundschau” in favor of “365 days for people, women and men”.
Whether on a specific day or just because: we are happy about the recognition of our achievements. That’s why we also praise the bosses in the new federal states. Female employees there receive a flower from their manager on International Women’s Day. But whether you get flowers or not, we wish you a very nice day.
