74 percent use painkillers that they have at home
Migraines, menstrual cramps, back problems, strains – every pain is different. Nevertheless, 74 percent of Germans simply reach for the painkillers they have in the closet at home when they have acute symptoms. But when does which painkiller actually make sense? We reveal when you should use ibuprofen and in which cases a paracetamol tablet makes more sense.
Paracetamol
Paracetamol is particularly useful for headaches. The drug has a good analgesic effect and also has an antipyretic effect. When taken correctly, paracetamol is well tolerated: Compared to other painkillers, it has the lowest potential for interactions and side effects. Nevertheless, like all medicines, it should be taken with great care. The maximum daily dose is 3,000 mg per day, which corresponds to taking a maximum of three 1,000 mg tablets. There should be at least six hours between doses.
Ibuprofen
The remedy is well suited for a whole range of ailments. In addition to headaches and backaches, ibuprofen can also be used to treat menstrual cramps, toothaches or pain from sports injuries. It not only relieves pain, but also has an anti-inflammatory effect and reduces fever. Prolonged use can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. The active substance can cause problems in the gastrointestinal tract, such as nausea or stomach ache. Therefore it is better to take it with meals.
Of course, these are only rough guidelines, each active ingredient has its advantages and disadvantages. Basically, it is always better to discuss the use of painkillers with the doctor treating you.
