How to stay fit and healthy in the summer

At no other time of the year do we live as intensely as now. We want to relax, enjoy and feel good. Our favorite season also has its pitfalls. You can read here what they are and how you can protect yourself from them.

Just don’t slack off now!

What could be nicer than spending a warm summer day under the open sky? But be careful: Our body’s own air conditioning system now has to work hard and produce cooling sweat to keep the body temperature at 37 degrees. If you sweat a lot, you also lose a lot of fluid and electrolytes. Therefore, the motto is: drink enough to prevent circulatory weakness. It should be two, better three liters of mineral water or fruit tea on warm days. But preferably not iced.

Tips against fat legs

When the temperatures are high, the legs often feel leaden, feet and ankles swell, and the (actually fitting) sandals suddenly pinch. Even a slight vein weakness is particularly noticeable in the summer heat. Blood circulation and lymphatic flow slow down, fluid sinks to the bottom. You should therefore always put your legs up for a few minutes in between. This allows the blood to flow back to the heart more easily. Tablets with horse chestnut extract or red vine leaves (both available in pharmacies) strengthen the veins.

Sleep well despite the heat

The air in the bedroom is still, your skin is sticky – no matter how hard you try, you can’t fall asleep. Annoying. It doesn’t have to get that far if you let fresh air into the room in the morning and evening with the window wide open (ten minutes each time is enough). After the morning airing, lower the shutters or draw the curtains. This prevents the room from heating up unnecessarily. Our extra tip sounds paradoxical, but it works: A warm shower before going to bed opens the pores and the accumulated heat escapes.

Help for summer skin

Actually, the sun’s rays are supposed to give us a beautiful complexion. Instead, there is sometimes redness, itching and small blisters. Then there is usually a sun allergy, experts speak of sun eczema, behind it. UV-A rays that penetrate the skin trigger an allergy-like reaction there. In acute cases, hydrocortisone helps. Important advice from dermatologists: It is essential to use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (at least 30) as a preventive measure.

The right drinks in the heat

The higher the number on the thermometer, the colder the drinks must be served. Do you agree? Admittedly, the first sips of an ice-cold lemonade are refreshing. But the liquid cold can cause stomach problems. In addition, cold drinks must first be brought to body temperature by the organism – energy is lost unnecessarily. Prefer to drink at room temperature. Or better yet, with lukewarm tea. It stimulates light sweating. That cools the body.

Jump in at the deep end? D rather not!

On particularly hot days, outdoor pools are real magnets for visitors. Jumping into cold water sounds tempting. But for the sake of your circulatory system, do without it. Because the temperature differences between air and water would do him more harm than good. Instead, gradually get used to the colder water temperature. First cool down your body in the shower. Then slowly go into the water and wet your arms, face and upper body before you dive down.

Tips against cystitis

Things happen very quickly in summer: when your wet swimwear dries on your body or you don’t want to end the mild barbecue evening on the terrace or balcony – the cystitis strikes. But if we have hypothermia, the immune system no longer works at full capacity. Rescuers in need are then the ingredients of the nettle. The plant contains a lot of potassium. The mineral has a diuretic effect and helps flush out germs. In acute cases, drink a cup a day (e.g. “Salus nettle leaf tea”, available in pharmacies and health food stores).

Adjust air conditioning correctly

What a pleasant feeling: seeking refuge from the oppressive heat in a well-tempered supermarket or letting the cool air blow on your face in the car. No question, air conditioning is a great thing. The problem in summer: The abrupt change between high and low temperatures affects the immune system and weakens our defences. Therefore, do not set the air conditioning system too cool. The temperature difference between inside and outside should not be more than six degrees.

Take a look at the vaccination card

Holidays on the Mediterranean, a few days in Bavaria or a trip to the other end of the world: Anyone planning a holiday should take a close look at their vaccination card. Special vaccinations (e.g. against yellow fever) are not only necessary before long-distance travel to certain countries. Large parts of southern Germany are among the risk areas for tick-borne encephalitis. Just as important: the general vaccination status. Check with the doctor whether there is sufficient protection against tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, measles and mumps.

Refresh first-aid kit

Check to see if last year’s funds may have expired. Then replace with new ones. The basic equipment includes painkillers (e.g. with the active ingredient ibuprofen or paracetamol). Think of a diarrhea medicine, just as indispensable: first aid material (plasters, compresses, gauze bandages). If you like being the focal point of mosquitoes, you also need care that stops the itching.
