How to get rid of wasps: Home remedies

August and September are the flowering season for wasps. Since they are under nature protection, they may at most be driven away. It’s easy with these eco-friendly home remedies!

High season for wasps: August and September don’t stray far from sweet or protein foods. The often uninvited guests are then chased away by nervous thrashing about. However, this often makes them aggressive and more likely to bite. Use our home remedy tricks instead!

Spray to repel wasps

Probably the simplest and gentlest home remedy for wasps is water. Fill a clean spray bottle, e.g. B. from Emsa (6.99 euros) with water. If a wasp approaches, spray towards it, but not directly at it. The fine spray signals the wasp that it is raining. As a result, she quickly disappears again and retreats to her nest.

Grapes as a bait

Cut up fresh grapes and place them a few feet away from your seat. The sweet scent distracts the animals. But be careful: the scent can also lead to even more wasps being attracted.

Lemon and Tea Tree Oil

Another way you can keep wasps away is by slicing lemons or oranges and placing them like the grapes a few feet away. Alternatively, you can also use lemon oil, e.g. B. from aromatics for about 13 euros or orange scented oil, z. B. from Elixr, use about 5 euros. As well as tea tree oil, e.g. B. from australian bodycare, about 9 euros .

Coffee, garlic and basil

To keep wasps away you can also plant tomatoes, basil and frankincense in your garden or on the balcony. In the best case scenario, the scent will drive the wasps away. This can, but does not always have to work. After all, a few scent molecules won’t stop the wasp from feeding. It is worth trying with freshly cut garlic cloves or burning coffee. Put the coffee in a fireproof container and set it on fire. The smoke is supposed to keep the wasps away.

cooked ham

You can also distract wasps with boiled ham – and drive them away. A slice of the delicious sausage baited at a safe distance can work wonders.

copper coins

A very old trick when it comes to driving away wasps: The annoying insects are said to not like the smell of brass. Copper coins distributed on the table should therefore keep them away from us. If you like, you can also rub the copper coins between your hands after they have been lying in the sun for a while – this way you protect yourself twice!

paper bag

Admittedly, this ingenious trick is pretty mean! All they need is a brown paper bag. If you make a dummy wasp nest out of this and then hang it up, you will successfully distract the insects. Wasps don’t like to be near someone else’s nest and therefore like to withdraw voluntarily.

Muted colors

Wasps are attracted to bright colors – if you dress in muted tones, you automatically offer the insects less surface to attack. The same applies to the choice of color for your table decoration.

More tips to keep wasps away

  • Clean up leftovers immediately after eating
  • Cover cakes, juices, spreads and fruit so you don’t accidentally swallow a wasp
  • With fruit trees, you should harvest ripe fruit regularly and remove fallen fruit
  • Avoid deodorants and creams with fragrances and perfume in summer
  • Prevent nest building by closing openings, e.g. on roller shutters, or cavities in walls or garden furniture and possible nesting sites with fly screens
  • Put fly screens on the windows to keep wasps out of your home

Better not to do that!

Don’t blow on the wasp when it approaches. The carbon dioxide contained in the air we breathe makes the insects particularly aggressive. Insects are also irritated by intense beating. And the following applies: the more aggressive a wasp, the more likely it is to sting.

You should also not buy wasp traps that are filled with sweet juice or beer. The animals die in agony in the liquid. Since wasps are protected species, you must not destroy nests or kill wasps. A fine of up to 50,000 euros can be imposed for the killing of a wasp or a specially protected wasp species such as the spinning top wasp or buttonhorn wasp . The same applies to the unauthorized removal of a nest.
