Turmeric has blossomed into a real superfood in recent years. No wonder – many health effects are attributed to the medicinal plant from Asia. It helps with arthrosis , diabetes mellitus and gastrointestinal complaints, among other things. The “magic tuber”, as turmeric is also known, is best known for its anti-inflammatory effect. Various studies have shown that curcumin, the most important ingredient in the plant, is just as effective against inflammation as painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

Turmeric alleviates Alzheimer’s

But our brains also benefit from the health-promoting benefits of curcumin. Both a US study and Indian researchers came to the conclusion in their study that turmeric has a positive effect on our brain. Regular intake of turmeric can significantly relieve symptoms of Alzheimer’s , the most common form of dementia.

But how can the health success of curcumin in connection with dementia be explained? The exact cause of Alzheimer’s is not known. However, protein deposits, a changed concentration of certain messenger substances and inflammation in the nervous system play an important role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect of curcumin can positively influence the changes mentioned and accordingly protect against inflammation, oxidative stress and deposits. Thanks to curcumin, memory can be improved and the destruction of nerve cells in the brain can be slowed down.

Take turmeric properly

The curcumin contained in the tuber is not water-soluble. This means that our body has difficulty absorbing the ingredient. It is also quickly broken down by the liver, so it only gets into our bloodstream for a short time. For this reason, it is best to continuously consume smaller amounts of the magic tuber every day. Please note, however, that the daily amount of up to three grams recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) should not be exceeded. Overdose of turmeric can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea , gas, diarrhea and heartburn. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with gallstones should not eat turmeric.
