Due to the fact that the level of the female sex hormone estrogen decreases during menopause, the structure of the mucous membranes in the vagina changes. These are less well supplied with blood and thus, like the skin of the labia, thinner and therefore more susceptible to injuries. At the same time, the production of vaginal secretions decreases and the mucous membrane becomes drier. The resulting vaginal dryness  can make sexual intercourse painful.

The hormonal imbalance and resulting vaginal dryness also reduces the number of beneficial bacteria in the sensitive vaginal environment, making the vagina more susceptible to infections such as vaginal thrush  or urinary tract infections. This can become noticeable through symptoms such as itching, burning and altered discharge. On top of that, the drop in estrogen often leads to a loss of  libido , which can put a strain on the relationship.

Despite the physical changes, menopause doesn’t necessarily mean that your love life has to get worse. If you pay attention to a few things, you can effectively counteract it. The vaginal dryness caused by the lack of estrogen can be treated locally, for example, with suppositories or ointments containing estrogen. Also make sure that you use lubricating gel during intercourse, which can also compensate for the lack of moisture. Homeopathy and acupuncture can help with a loss of libido. In addition, the use of sex toys can bring a breath of fresh air to your love life with your partner.
