Health Benefits of Cycling

Cycling is the favorite sport of the Germans. Whether on the way to work or on a long weekend tour: We pedal to get fit and enjoy the fresh air. You can find out the advantages of cycling here!

Recharge your batteries and train your respiratory system

Pedal, breathe deeply, feel the fresh air in your lungs, keep cycling, breathe out. According to ADFC, the General German Bicycle Club eV, sports such as walking, jogging or even cycling are the best things we can do for our respiratory organs. The lungs are evenly filled with oxygen and the respiratory muscles are strengthened. This protects us from a cold and can even relieve asthma.

Encourage fat metabolism

We burn around 400 calories during an hour of cycling (at a body weight of 60 kg and around 18 km/h). Advantage of such a pace in the so-called aerobic area: It activates our fat burning particularly well, because it needs oxygen. On the other hand, if you want to lose weight particularly quickly, it is best to do interval training more often. Put the pedal to the metal three times for five minutes each. Then drive at a moderate pace again. This increases the calorie consumption – in absolute terms. That makes you slim.

Support the joints

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the office chair, then on the couch – our everyday life is often monotonous for the joints. So just go to work by bike. Even a ten-minute bike ride provides the articular cartilage – for example, the knee – with better oxygen and nutrients, which can help prevent arthrosis. Because the greatest weight is on the saddle, we also protect the joints – if we choose an easy gear. An advantage over sports such as jogging.

Get your heart and circulation going

Our heart works more efficiently through regular biking and is thus relieved. We achieve the optimal effect from a tour of at least 30 minutes. The World Health Organization recommends five times a week at best. This can reduce the risk of heart attack by 50 percent. And you don’t have to bike until you drop. Driving at 15 km/h also gets your circulation going.

Improve coordination

Cycling also trains mobility and our ability to react. Sometimes we drive on sand and gravel, then on roads, steer around corners, pedal uphill or jet downhill. The mind and body have to react quickly and adapt to new situations at lightning speed.

Cycling is worth it

Lower the risk of cancer

Good news: Researchers from the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg found that moderate exercise – especially cycling – can significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer in women after menopause. Anyone who sits on the bike for 30 to 60 minutes a day reduces their risk of breast cancer by a third.

Build the muscles

Do you only train your legs when cycling? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! Whole muscle chains are used – from the hand muscles to the torso muscles and the buttocks muscles. Sporty pedaling on the bike can slow down the age-related conversion of muscle to fat mass and stimulate the metabolism of the muscle fibers. If you want to specifically build leg muscles, cycle in higher gears. A lower saddle challenges the gluteal muscles.

Activate happiness hormones

Feel pure happiness while cycling: After about half an hour of endurance sports, endorphins and serotonin are released, which can counteract depression. The even movement awakens a feeling of harmony in us. Of course, the tour through the countryside is even more beneficial for your well-being.

Strengthen the back

The circular leg movements relieve tension in the spine and support the back by building muscle, especially in the lumbar area. The correct sitting posture is important: Do not lean your upper body forward more than 30 degrees.

Strengthen the immune system

Your defenses will be activated from the very first minute of cycling. A 20-minute tour can strengthen them in the long term and fight pathogens while doing so. Wear breathable clothing so you don’t “wet sweat”.
