Healing mud

The power of the earth is a wonderful gift: clay, moor and silt provide new energy for your skin, joints and immune system.

Crocuses are budding outside. The down jacket is hanging in the closet again. We breathe easy. But the body often doesn’t keep up so quickly. The immune system struggles with the changing temperatures and we feel tired all the time because the hormones are going haywire.
Air, light and earth help against this. Those who use their power can start spring fit. Healing earth, for example, a purely natural product, cleanses the body inside and out. It detoxifies and brings the immune system into position. This works against an acidic stomach, aching joints, inflammation and tense muscles and calms the vegetative nervous system. Thanks to its high silicon content, it also firms the skin.

Statutory health insurance reimburses the costs for an outpatient cure with healing earth applications if it is medically necessary. The general practitioner or specialist must certify this in an application. There is also a subsidy of 13 euros per day for accommodation. It is best to choose the appropriate place and spa hotel and then contact the doctor. Individual fango packs are also available on prescription, often in combination with physiotherapy or a massage.

Use gifts of nature

Whether clay, loess, sea silt, moor or fango, whether white, brown, yellow or green: the soil has a variety of healing earths. They mostly formed during the last ice age, when the finest rock dust was deposited. The tiny particles can optimally store heat and release it slowly. And they contain all the important minerals and trace elements. The different colors are caused by the respective content of iron and copper. In Germany, for example, the healing earth “Luvos” is approved as a medicinal product.
But other products are not necessarily worse. Each soil is made up a little differently and has different benefits. “The best way to find out which one is most effective for you is to try it out,” says Gabriele Zimmermann, naturopath from Munich.

Mud cure for at home

Pain wraps

Mix one of the healing clays with a little water to form a thick, smooth paste. Then apply directly to the skin – the larger the area to be treated, the thinner. Wrap a damp cloth around it first and a dry cotton cloth second. Wrap the whole thing in a woolen cloth and crawl under a blanket to rest. If you want, you can take a hot water bottle with you. After 60 to 90 minutes, remove the envelope.
For a warm wrap, heat the earth porridge to 40 degrees with hot water and spread it on a cloth. Wrap again according to the three-layer principle. After 30 to 45 minutes, remove the envelope. This relaxes hardened and cramped muscles.

Compress against inflammation

Soak three to four tablespoons of healing earth in one liter of water for a few hours. Then dip a cloth in the healing earth water, let it drain and apply wet. In contrast to the wrap, the cloth is only big enough to cover the affected area. Put a dry cloth over it, possibly wrap it all up with a sheet or blanket. Rest for one to one and a half hours.
Wrap the compress over your forehead, temples or neck if you have a headache.

Face pack against impure skin

For a mask, mix two tablespoons of healing earth (clay or loess earth) with four tablespoons of warm water. If you have dry skin, add a little olive oil, half a teaspoon at most. Apply, avoiding the eye area.
After 20 minutes, rinse off the face mask with clear water and apply lotion to the skin. If you want to use the peeling effect: let the soil dry on your skin and rub it off with a damp cloth.

Bathing for well-being

Get yourself nice and dirty: For a full bath, add 500 to 1000 grams of healing earth (loesserde) to around 37 degree warm water. Bask in the warmth for 15 to 30 minutes. Then wrap in a bath towel without drying and leave for half an hour. Then shower off the worst of it. Avoid the remains of healing earth adhering to the skin and lie down again. After about a quarter of an hour, rub off the lumps of earth with a damp cloth. This increases the circulation effect and makes the skin rosy and clean. For a mud bath, set the water to about 40 degrees. Moor only gives off heat slowly, so you have a pleasant feeling of 37 degrees on your skin. However, full baths strain the circulation. If you have problems with this, it is best to talk to your doctor or naturopath beforehand. Or try a sitz bath. Plus half the amount of healing earth
put in the tub.

Drink for the immune system

A glass of healing earth water per day is enough to support the immune system. For the drink, dissolve one or two teaspoons in still water or cold herbal tea and leave overnight. For the mild version, the sediment remains in the glass. The healing clay has a more concentrated effect if you stir up the sentence again and again and drink it in sips, preferably on an empty stomach after getting up and just before going to bed. Continue the drinking cure for three to four weeks, then take a break for two weeks.

health resorts

BAD SOBERNHEIM

In the tranquil health resort in Rhineland-Palatinate, Pastor Emanuel Felke (1856-1926) developed his holistic cures, which combined the elements of light, air, water and earth with clay. His legacy is still alive today. Those who wish can bathe outdoors in the earth in summer. To do this, “troughs” are dug into the ground and filled with freshly excavated clay. Felke cures are offered by the organic hotel “Menschels Tolfioowresort” (www.menschel.com) and “BollAnt’s Wellnesshotel” .

BAD WURZACH

In the oldest mud bath in Baden-Württemberg, healing earth comes into proper tubs. In the “Kurhotel am Reischberg” (www.kurhotel-am-reischberg.de), bathers traditionally sit in wooden tubs, relaxing in a healthy mix of moorland and thermal water. Anyone suffering from rheumatism, joint, intervertebral disc and spine problems or osteoporosis is in good hands here.

BAD MUSCOW

Moor bathing also has a tradition in Saxony. Ever since natural moor was discovered in Bad Muskau in 1824, it has been used for cures. The imposing “Kulturhotel Fürst Pückler Park”, built in the historical style, revives this tradition luxuriously .

RÜGEN

Chalk treatments have been experiencing a renaissance on Germany’s largest island for ten years. In the “Cliff Hotel” guests are spoiled with Rügen healing chalk during an oriental Rasul ceremony. The chalk is applied to the body and dries slightly in the herbal steam of the Rasul bath. After a short time, the bath is slowly warmed up again. The pack softens a little and causes a pleasant tingling sensation. It works like a peeling and tightens the skin (www.cliff-hotel.de). Chalk mud is also applied by lifeguards in the “Grand Hotel Binz” with a purifying effect, in combination with sea buckthorn oil, which soothes irritated skin ( www.grandhotelbinz.com ). Rubbed with chalk mud, guests in the “Wald hotel Göhren” can relax on the water bed or in the Rasul bath .
