Female prostate: exciting facts

Many are not even aware of its existence and numerous myths still surround it: the female prostate. Find out what functions it performs and why not all women have a paraurethral gland.

Yes, women actually have a kind of prostate too. Find out how it differs from the male variant and what functions this so-called paraurethral gland fulfills.

Female prostate: 3 exciting facts

1. Women can ejaculate too

The observation that women can also squirt during sexual intercourse and orgasm is not new. However, for a long time it was unclear whether it was just a matter of so-called stress incontinence during orgasm and whether the liquid was urine. However, anatomical studies  have shown that in most cases the ejaculate is not secreted via the urethra but actually via the paraurethral glands (medical term for the female prostate) and, like in men  , contains prostate-specific antigen (PSA) . Whether and how much fluid is secreted via the female prostate during sexual stimulation varies greatly from person to person.

2. Not every woman has a prostate

Unlike the male prostate, not every woman has this gland. During the third month of embryonic development, the prostate begins to develop. In male embryos, formation is driven and ensured by testosterone . In female embryos with low testosterone levels, the formation of the prostate feminina does not take place or only partially. In this study from Austria, which was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine , the paraurethral glands and thus the female prostate were present in every second woman .

3. The female prostate has different shapes

The fact that there are still many myths surrounding the female prostate and that even its existence is not generally known could also be due to the fact that it comes in a number of different forms. In the 1980s and 1990s, the physician  Milan Zaviacic identified six anatomical forms of the female prostate, which differ in size and number of gland ducts, based on 200 patients and 150 autopsies at the University Hospital in Bratislava. Basically, the female prostate is close to the vaginal entrance and usually consists of several paraurethral glands around the urethra.
