Dye your hair yourself – this is how it works without a hairdresser!

During the second lockdown of the Corona pandemic, the hairdressers closed again. If you don’t want to wait until your next appointment, you can do it yourself at home and dye your hair. However, you should note the following tips!

Once again, the hairdressing salons have to close indefinitely in lockdown. If you want to freshen up your roots or have a few highlights, you have to do it yourself now. To ensure that you can dye your hair at home, you should observe the following tips.

Dye your hair yourself: The right hair color

To get one thing straight: We advise against large-scale color experiments. Better wait until the hairdressers have reopened if you want to make major changes such as going from brown to blonde or want a natural balayage.

When coloring yourself, start with your basic tone and color a maximum of two shades lighter or darker . The eyebrows are usually a good guide to find out your base tone. Another clue is the color scale on the product packaging . It shows how the color result affects your hair. Remember: If your hair color is not listed, do not color your hair with this product as it will deviate too much from your base tone.

The range of hair dyes in the drugstore is immense – there is mousse , lotions or creams . But which one is the right one? It is best for beginners to use a mousse or cream, as these are easier to apply and thicker. Nothing can run or drip. Lotions are applied directly from the bottle – fast and precise work is required here. If you have shoulder length hair, you should buy two packs to have enough product.

Additionally, buy a hair coloring brush for easier application and a more precise result. In most hair color packs you will usually only find an application bottle with which you are supposed to apply the product.

Coloring more gently with natural or herbal hair colors?

If you want to color your hair more gently, you can use natural or herbal hair colors that do not contain ammonia and are more compatible. In contrast to conventional dyeing, the color lays around the hair and does not penetrate. Natural tones such as brown, red or copper can be achieved well with herbal hair colors. However, bleaching proves to be difficult – if you want to be lighter, you have to resort to oxidation dyes, which break down the hair structure in order to be able to extract pigment from the hair.

However, not every natural or herbal hair color contains purely natural ingredients. Some manufacturers add chemical additives. To be on the safe side, you should check the list of contents carefully or use certified natural products directly.

Alternative to dyeing: tinting hair

If you are still unsure and have never dyed your hair yourself before, you can dye your hair first. However, a tint is only suitable if you want your hair to be darker. If you want your hair to be lighter, you have to resort to a coloring that removes the color pigments from the hair and thus bleaches it.

Tips before coloring

In order for your hair to absorb the color properly, your hair should be free of styling products and not freshly washed, as a light layer of sebum protects the scalp. Always apply the dye to dry hair. Apply a fat cream to the contours of your face and your ears to prevent unsightly spots on the skin. During dyeing, you should quickly wipe away any spots of color with a damp cloth. Wear old clothes that can get dirty.

Dye your own hair – this is how it works:

  • Have your utensils ready, read the instructions for use thoroughly beforehand and follow the individual steps.
  • To protect your skin from color around the hairline, apply petroleum jelly or a high-fat face cream along the roots and around the ears.
  • Section your hair strand by strand with a comb. Start at the roots and work the color down the lengths.
  • If you only color the roots, you should spread the color a little bit down the lengths at the end of the exposure time so that the transition is softer.
  • Set a timer to let the color work just right. The exposure time begins when you have finished applying.
  • After the exposure time, wash your hair thoroughly. In order not to stress the hair unnecessarily, rinse it out with lukewarm rather than hot water. Also use a treatment to give the hair additional care and to close the open cuticle layer again.
