For years, the myth has persisted in magazines, diet guides and on numerous websites that pineapple is a real miracle in the fight against obesity because it contains the enzyme bromelain, which melts the pounds. But is pineapple really suitable for losing weight effectively?

Tasty and healthy pineapple
The pineapple is one of the most popular exotic fruits, after all 200 different substances are responsible for the aroma of the fruit. The pineapple can also score with its ingredients and nutritional values. 100 g of pineapple have just 59 kilocalories. It is also rich in vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, iron and calcium. No wonder that the fruit is often found in diet recipes – most recently, since the enzyme bromelain is touted as a fat burner.
Great fat burner – or not?
According to the Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE), the enzyme bromelain has a digestive and anti-inflammatory effect in the body and can break down proteins into small particles. However, according to the Swiss Society for Nutrition (SGE), it does not affect the fat balance. A calorie deficit alone can ensure that fat mass is broken down.
Often people with a pineapple diet still lose weight. This is not due to the bromelain, but rather a reduction in total calories to a very low level. Although this enables rapid weight loss, the body initially loses water and muscles. Ultimately, this also reduces the calorie consumption that is required in complete rest. If the person then eats normally, the yo-yo effect strikes.

It is better to lose weight slowly and sustainably with a change in diet, exercise and a negative calorie balance.
