Dentures: Types & Alternatives

Nobody has to laugh coyly behind closed doors: crowns, bridges and implants fit in like real teeth.

An unfortunate fall – and the tooth is out. Or it crumbles under caries attacks. No need to worry, because damage and gaps in the teeth can be corrected invisibly.

Full cast gold crowns last up to 25 years. They cost around 250 euros (minus the fixed subsidy from the statutory health insurers, see p. 29). They are often provided with a plastic panel on the sides. Price then about 450 euros.

Galvanic crown Ceramic is applied to a thin layer of gold . This type of crown fits extremely snugly, without the slightest gap between the crown and the tooth. From 500 euros.

All-ceramic or porcelain crowns do not require any metal and reflect the light like natural teeth. Today they can also be used instead of the heavily used molars. Another advantage: they do not trigger allergies. Around 450 to 600 euros.

Bridges are made of the same materials as crowns. Metal-ceramic bridges are the standard solution. A fully veneered anterior bridge costs around 1,300 euros, and one made from all-ceramic around 1,400 euros. Both are very resilient and last 10 to 15 years.

Implants are mostly made of titanium. They replace the missing root and grow firmly into the jawbone. The dentist anchors crowns or bridges on this foundation. That often lasts a lifetime. Unit price 1700 to 2000 euros.

supplementary dental insurance

What does supplementary dental insurance bring ?

Statutory health insurance only pays a fixed subsidy for dentures, depending on the findings. Example: For a 3000 euro implant, the health insurance reimburses around 390 euros. Depending on the tariff, the approximately 150 additional dental insurers cover up to 100 percent of the costs for therapy and dentures, often up to 90 percent for inlays or implants. Additional insurance costs 15 to 40 euros per month. Please complete before the first major construction site occurs.

Don’t sign it right away

Dentures are expensive, and a treatment and cost plan is complicated. This includes the diagnosis and a suggested treatment. However, the health insurance does not cover all the costs, the patient’s own contribution varies depending on the therapy. In your treatment and cost plan you will find both the fixed subsidy from the health insurance company and your personal contribution. Do not sign until you have read and understood everything. Check that the treatments discussed have been listed in full. If you don’t understand everything, ask your dentist or get information free of charge from a patient advice center (page 35).

PRINT WITHOUT FEAR

The end of sticky goo and gags: The “digital impression” works contact-free

The steel U full of impression material is a thing of the past in more and more dental practices. Instead, there is digital volume tomography: the dentist just glides over the teeth with a small scanner signal head without touching them. A computer calculates an exact three-dimensional 1:1 representation of the teeth and the oral cavity from the collected data. After that, dental technicians fabricate the dentures. The radiation exposure is 75 percent lower than with computer tomography – with the same quality. The entire examination takes only a few minutes.
