Cutting hair yourself: instructions for men’s haircuts

Is the short haircut getting longer and getting out of shape? We explain step by step how to get a men’s haircut and what you have to consider when cutting.

Since the end of December, the lockdown hairdressers have been closed indefinitely. Especially in people and men with short haircuts, the centimeters that are too long are more noticeable. Now it’s either waiting for the lockdown or cutting your hair yourself. We will explain step-by-step how to do the self-experiment at home and how to cut your hair :

Instructions for the short haircut

The most important tip to keep in mind when trimming your short hair: don’t do it alone and find a trusted and helping hand to cut your hair. Unlike long hair, a short haircut doesn’t forgive small tanks – and you’ll end up with a pot haircut sooner than you’d like. Before you get to your hair, a little preparation is required: get a pair of hair clippers or an electric hair clipper. You’ll also need a towel, a comb, a few clipping clips as needed, a mirror, and good light.

Cut hair wet or dry?

When you trim your hair with clippers, it works best on dry hair. If scissors are used, you can decide for yourself. With a dry cut, the hair is more manageable and you can immediately see how the finished result has turned out. With a frizzy hair structure, wet hair is easier to tame and the wrong parts do not accidentally get under the electric hair clipper. However, keep in mind that when your hair is wet, it is longer and has less volume.

Men’s haircut with scissors and with clippers

  • Drape a towel over your shoulders and comb your hair thoroughly.
  • Arrange your hair as you wear your parting. As with the women’s haircut, your hair is divided into different sections and shortened.
  • Start at the nape of the neck and work your way up to the back of the head. To do this, hold a comb in one hand. With the other hand, hold the clippers or scissors and slide over the hair or cut the strands. Be careful not to shave or cut too high – this will take the length of the hair on the top of your head afterwards.
  • At the back of the head , carefully smooth out the transitions and correct unsightly edges.
  • At the top of the head , either separate the sections of hair, pull them up and cut parallel to your finger, or pull the sections of hair through the comb and position the hair clippers parallel to the head. Go slow and don’t cut off too much. You can always improve.
  • Use smaller clippers or a beard trimmer to touch up the contours .
  • Finally, you can shave the contours of the neck . Do not cut a smooth edge, but make slight movements upwards – this will soften the edge.
