We are in the middle of the fourth wave. According to virologist Christian Drosten, a 2G model is not enough to survive the second Corona winter and he speaks of a new Corona shutdown.
Corona numbers are rising nationwide . The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 50,196 positive tests within 24 hours, a new high since the beginning of the pandemic. The seven-day incidence rises to 249.1. The federal states are reacting to the worsening situation. The 2G model has been in force in Saxony since November 8th . This means that only those who have recovered and those who have been vaccinated are allowed to go to restaurants, pubs or discos. Berlin is also tightening the corona rules. From Monday there will also be 2G in the capital.
Drosten: Shutdown measures cannot be ruled out
Virologist Christian Drosten spoke of a “real emergency situation” in the NDR podcast The Corona Virus Update . He considers new contact restrictions to be unavoidable. “We have to do something now,” said the head of virology at the Berlin Charité. “So we now probably have to control the infection activity again through contact measures – not probably, but definitely.” A “very strenuous” Corona winter is expected “with new, let’s say: shutdown measures”.
Defeat the corona pandemic with vaccinations
If the number of vaccinations does not continue to rise, another 100,000 corona deaths can be expected. This is a “conservative estimate,” warned Drosten. In Drosten’s view, it is not enough to sufficiently reduce the corona numbers with the 3G rule. Anyone who is not vaccinated and goes to an event or to work with a negative test could become infected there because vaccinated people can also pass on the virus. In order to defeat the pandemic in the long term, the “ideal goal is a population that has been completely vaccinated three times”.
