Five common mistakes made when wearing a FFP2 mask

An FFP2 mask offers more protection against infection with the corona virus than conventional fabric masks. However, errors in application can affect the protection of the masks and increase the risk of infection. Therefore, you should avoid these common mistakes when wearing an FFP2 mask.

Only FFP2 protective masks or medical face masks may be worn in all public transport and shops – face masks made of fabric are therefore no longer allowed. FFP2 protective masks offer better protection against the coronavirus, but only if they fit properly . We name typical mistakes that can happen when wearing an FFP2 protective mask.

The most common mistakes when wearing an FFP2 mask

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has listed the most common application errors in an FFP2 respirator. Basically, it can be stated that an FFP2 mask can only prevent the risk of infection with the corona virus if it sits tightly on the face. That sounds obvious, but various factors can quickly mean that your mask no longer fits correctly.

Adjust the nose clip correctly

The FFP2 protective mask should cover the mouth AND nose – this is the only way to effectively reduce the risk of infection . A nose clip ensures an optimal fit. Adjust this to the shape of your nose so that the mask fits snugly on your face and there are no open areas. A mask worn the wrong way round will not protect you.

Beard and hair impair FFP2 protection

Beard wearers do not have the full protection of the FFP2 mask because it does not sit tight enough on the face. “Every FFP2 mask lives from the fact that it is tight. The fact that it lies completely against the contours of the face so that nothing escapes between the mask and the skin – that is not one hundred percent guaranteed with a person with a full beard,” explains virologist Bodo Plachter in an interview with SWR. Unfortunately only one thing helps – the beard has to come off. A three-day beard can also affect the fit, according to the expert.
Long, loose hair that falls in the face also impairs the sealing protection of the mask. It is best to tie your hair in a ponytail.

Retaining straps must be properly seated

When you put the mask on, pay close attention that the straps on your mask are not twisted or resting on your ears. Bands that are too far on the top of the head also do not provide a sufficient seal. Once you have put on the mask, you should avoid constantly adjusting the fit of the mask. Any contact with the mask carries a potential risk of infection as you may come into contact with viruses.

Store the FFP2 protective mask correctly

Even if you only want to take off your FFP2 mask for a short time – please do not let it hang around your neck or dangle from your wrist. The mask could be contaminated with viruses and promote infection. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices recommends touching the rubber bands when removing the mask. Do not touch the inside of your FFP2 mask as this is where viruses reside and contagion is possible. After removing the mask, store it airtight in a separate bag or in a plastic box.

Hang wet masks to dry to avoid mold growth. FFP2 masks should dry for at least seven days so that they are sufficiently disinfected and can be worn again. Alternatively, you can put your mask in the oven at 80 degrees for an hour to disinfect it. You can read more about the correct use of the FFP2 protective masks here .
