Clean more sustainably: We test the cleaners from Moanah

We are increasingly trying to do without plastic and to pay attention to our environment, but this is proving to be difficult, especially in the household and when cleaning. The startup company Moanah wants to change that and offers more sustainable and plastic-free cleaning products. You can find out how good the more environmentally friendly products are and whether they have convinced us in ourTolfioow editorial test.

Plastic waste pollutes our oceans and poses a threat to its inhabitants. For this reason we are trying to ban more and more plastic from our everyday life. But too much plastic waste still ends up in our oceans. According to the WWF, 4.8 to 12.7 million tons per year are currently assumed. That’s the equivalent of about a truckload per minute!

The Mannheim-based company Moanah wants to counteract this and offers sustainable cleaning agents as refills in glass bottles . There are plenty of good reasons for this: According to the company, 55 tons of microplastics are produced every year in Germany alone by washing, cleaning and cleaning agents. Only 16 percent is actually recycled. The rest is incinerated or ends up in landfills and then in the sea. In addition, aggressive chemicals are used in commercially available cleaning agents. These are not only bad for the environment, but can also have health consequences, as they put a lot of strain on the lungs or can trigger allergies .

You can find out how good the more sustainable cleaners from Moanah really are and how they perform in comparison to conventional cleaning agents in our major vital editorial test . Our online editor Kristina Regentrop tried out the products for you.

Cleaning more sustainably – how good are Moanah’s cleaners?

Sunday is cleaning day for me. Most of the time I scrub my own four walls rather unmotivated. But today I’m really looking forward to cleaning the apartment because I can test the starter set from Moanah . It consists of

  • three adjustable and reusable glass bottles ,
  • six refills each with two all-purpose, glass and bathroom cleaners,
  • linen bag in which the refills are kept,
  • three rags and a microfiber cloth .

But before I can enthusiastically swing the cleaning rag, I have to mix my own cleaning agents. These are based on citric acid and do not require any aggressive chemicals. The ingredients are easily biodegradable, do not require any binding agents or microplastics and are therefore sustainable – a thumbs up for that. I fill all three bottles with 500 ml of warm water and add the cleaning powder, which dissolves quickly. I immediately notice that the products smell unobtrusive and pleasantly fresh. The only criticism I have: The spray heads on the bottles are made of plastic. During my research, I found out that Moanah would like to improve this in the future – I think the further optimization of the products and the open communication in this regard are great.

The Moanah cleaners in the test

I start my apartment cleaning in my kitchen. The all- purpose cleaner not only smells pleasantly of lily of the valley and country carnation, but effortlessly cleans all surfaces such as worktops and dining tables. I get my sink, the drainer and the dirty glass ceramic hob cleaned sparkling clean. Here I don’t notice any difference to the conventional chemical clubs – great! If there is a dried tea stain, I let the cleaner work for a few minutes, after which it can be easily removed.

Let’s continue in my bathroom. Here I use the yellow bathroom cleaner, which smells fresh and slightly like yuzu citrus. The cleaner effortlessly removes limescale and soap residue in the bathtub and washbasin. Traditional bathroom and toilet cleaners usually irritate my airways and make me cough. This time I have no complaints.

Finally, I use the glass cleaner to clean my mirrors . It smells pretty odorless. First of all, I make the mistake of wiping my mirrors clean with a normal rag instead of a soft, damp microfiber cloth. As a result, my result is not completely streak-free. The second time around, the result is much more satisfactory and the mirror is nice and clean. In the case of greasy stains, I recommend letting the glass cleaner soak in before wiping over the surface.

Conclusion: Moanah convinced me

After cleaning my apartment, I can say that Moanah’s products have convinced me and I can definitely recommend the more environmentally friendly cleaners. I am very excited to see what other products Moanah will offer in the future.
