Care tips from hairstylists

Summer, sun, delicately tanned skin. Great. Only the hair is often dull and brittle after the holiday. 10 care tips from hairstylist Maiken Ross to turn straw into gold again.

1. Since the holidays I only have straw on my head. There is no trace of shine.

How come? “Sun, salt and chlorinated water can damage the hair: the cuticle layer is roughened and protective lipids are lost,” explains hairstylist and Dove hair expert Maiken Ross.

The solution: care, care, care! The lost nutrients should be replenished quickly. Products: e.g. B. “Oat build-up cure” from Weleda, 150 ml approx. 10 euros; “Refining hair oil” from Guhl, 100 ml approx. 9 euros.

2. My scalp has been tight and itchy more often lately.

How come? A sunburn on the head, the climate change or an overreaction to salty water can be possible causes of an irritated scalp.

The solution: Stressed scalps now need a mild shampoo. If the redness persists, however, you should consult a doctor. Products: eg “Dermo Capillaire pH5 Shampoo” from Eucerin**, 250 ml approx. 11 euros; “Dercos Dermo-Sensitiv Shampoo” by Vichy**, 200 ml approx. 10 euros.

3. My hair is not only dry but also damaged.

How come? In the summer we often tie our hair in a tight ponytail and then go swimming. This can cause them to break off. Heat also damages hair fibers.

The solution: reduce the styling to the bare minimum. Maiken Ross: “Combing with a natural hairbrush and hair ties without metal connections prevents brittle hair.” Accompanying repair care: eg “Initialiste hair oil” from Kérastase*, 60 ml approx. 43 euros; “Intensive repair self-heating hair mask” from Dove, 20 ml approx. 2 euros.

4. I have the feeling that the chlorine and salt water residue from the holiday is not going away.

How come? “The feeling is mostly subjective and is due to the fact that dry hair does not feel completely clean,” says the expert. However, bleached hair can actually shimmer in a nasty green color due to too much chlorine.

The solution: If the hair is to be thoroughly cleaned or blond hair is to be spiced up, deep cleansers will help to remove all residues. Products: eg “Sun Care Hair & Body Cleanser” from Aveda*, 250 ml approx. 22 euros; “Shampoo Three” by Paul Mitchell, 100 ml approx. 8 euros.

Care tips for more bounce, less split ends and more color

5. My curls suddenly lack bounce.

How come? “Curly hair is naturally drier,” says Maiken Ross. Due to the additional strain in summer, the curls often only hang down tiredly.

The solution: “When blow-drying, the best way to give the curls new momentum is to use a diffuser attachment,” says the expert. Appropriate care and styling products also bring the curly hair back into shape. Products: eg “Locken Pur Shampoo” from PantenePro-V, 250 ml approx. 4 euros; “Flexible Curls Styling Mousse” from Nivea, 150 ml, around 3 euros

6. My tips are splitting. What can I do against split ends?

How come? Depending on the length of your hair, your tips can hold out for a number of years and are accordingly pre-stressed. The increased UV radiation and heat can literally finish them off.

The solution: you will guess: cut it off! If you don’t have the heart to go to the hairdresser, top serums provide SOS help. They return valuable lipids to the hair, keep the ends supple and thus visibly reduce split ends. Products: eg “Hair Tip Fluid” from Alcina*, 30 ml approx. 20 euros; “Karité Repair- Serum” by René Furterer**, 30 ml approx. 20 euros.

7. My highlights have been barely noticeable since the summer.

How come? “If the natural hair has faded due to UV radiation, the highlights no longer stand out so clearly – the lighter areas therefore appear flatter,” explains the hairstylist.

The solution: Maiken Ross recommends a combination of light highlights at the roots and darker ones at the ends. “This makes the color more varied again and the sensitive lengths are not stressed by additional bleaching.” Special shampoos also quickly conjure up new light reflections in the hair and protect lightly highlighted hair. Products: eg “Blonde Care Highlights Shampoo” by Garnier Fructis, 200 ml approx. 3 euros.

Care tips for more color and more shine

8. My coloration has faded. I want a more intense color again without immediately re-dyeing.

How come? If you play a lot in the water and are exposed to the sun on top of that, the color will wash out or fade faster.

The solution: color-refreshing shampoos prevent fading and can intensify the coloring. Products: eg “Color Recharge Conditioner” from Wella Professionals*, 200 ml approx. 14 euros; “Sunflower and Mountain Tea Shampoo” by Korres*, 250 ml approx. 12 euros.

9. My gray hair has looked dull and tired since the summer.

How come? Maiken Ross explains: “Gray hair is a mixture of pigmented and unpigmented hair. If the colored areas are lightened by the sun, the overall picture appears less rich in contrast and duller.”

The solution: Special shampoos, eg with cornflower extract, set light reflections and give gray hair a silvery shimmer. Products: eg “Silver Reflex Shampoo” from Schauma, 250 ml approx. 2 euros; “Silver Reflexes Shampoo” by Yves Rocher, 200 ml approx. 6 euros.

10. My dyed hair has dried out and is no longer shiny.

How come? “Colored hair is more sensitive than untreated hair because the chemical treatment opens the hair surface,” says the Dove expert. If the hair is rough, it cannot reflect the light optimally – then it no longer shines.

The solution : finish the hair wash with a cold shower. “That closes the cuticle,” explains Maiken Ross. Color rinses and treatments bring shine to colored hair. Products: eg “Colour Mate Conditioner”
from Aussie, 250 ml approx. 6 euros; “Miracle color care treatment” from Elvital, 200 ml approx. 4 euros.
