Study: The pill increases our need for closeness
As a Danish study from Aarhus University has now found, taking the pill increases the level of oxytocin. This is a hormone that plays a particularly important role with regard to social relationships, touch and sex. That’s why oxytocin is also known by the nicknames “cuddle hormone” or “bonding hormone”.
How does the cuddle hormone oxytocin work?
Oxytocin is not only a hormone, but also a neurotransmitter. This means that it not only circulates in the blood but also in the brain, controlling the activity of certain nerve cells. That is why the bonding hormone has many great effects: As soon as it is released, we feel good. It ensures well-being and reduces stress as it keeps our cortisol levels in check. A study by the University of Zurich even showed that the release of the cuddle hormone has a positive effect on dealing with other people, as it can strengthen our trust in others.

Influence of the pill on our need for cuddles
If women feel particularly emotionally needy while taking hormonal contraception and demand a high level of attention, this may be due to the effect of the pill, according to Professor Michael Winterdahl, who led the study.
While the release of the hormone is completely normal in certain situations and even essential for bonding and forming social relationships, women who take the pill can experience a permanently increased level of oxytocin. This can result in an increased need for closeness, confirmation and attention.
