Best care products and their ingredients

When we stand in front of the cosmetics shelf, we can look forward to an increasingly sophisticated range of beauty products. But the names on many jars and tubes are increasingly leaving us in the dark: We say what micellar water, voile & co. are – and what they really do for us.

Here we have the hit list of care products

astringierend

This term is often found on creams or facial tonics that contract the pores and make the complexion appear finer and more even. These care products are perfect for blemishes and combination skin prone to shine.

soothing

A body or face care product with this label contains skin-soothing ingredients such as aloe vera, panthenol or trace elements – and is tolerated by sensitive areas (e.g. “Crème Dermo-Apaisante” day care from Payot, 50 ml approx. 32 euros).

Baking Powder

The baked face powder owes its name to a special manufacturing process in which it is heated in a terracotta pan for 48 hours – this way the moisture evaporates and the pigment content is particularly high (e.g. “Mineral Skinfinish Natural” powder from Mac Cosmetics , about 32 euros). This is perfect for anyone who prefers a natural make-up, because this powder can replace a conventional foundation thanks to its high coverage. Tip: If you use a damp sponge for application instead of a powder brush, you will get an even more intensive result.

Cushion-Make-up

The liquid primer is in a can with a dampened cushion that resembles one of the old stamp dampeners. It is made of antibacterial material so that bacteria cannot collect in it. As soon as the enclosed applicator is pressed onto the cushion, some make-up will come out. The advantage: The make-up can be applied particularly finely in a short time – so the complexion looks beautifully natural. Some cosmetic manufacturers offer the possibility of refilling or changing the pillow.

Doctor Brands

Products from these cosmetic brands are not only available in pharmacies, but were developed together with doctors, whose everyday experiences with patients are incorporated into the formulation. The creams are primarily aimed at special skin problems such as a sensitive or impure complexion – in contrast to feel-good creams, which are primarily about a pleasant scent and a delicate texture.

Glow Enhancer

Face cream or fluid that gives tired skin new radiance – for example with light-reflecting or delicate apricot-colored pigments. To be used alone or spread over foundation (e.g. “Vitamin C Instant Glow Enhancer”, The Body Shop, 25 ml approx. 23 euros).

Highlighter

The term comes from decorative cosmetics and is used for creamy textures, gels, make-up sticks or powders that contain shimmering pigments
These reflect the light, let the complexion shine and specifically emphasize individual areas – such as the area below the eyebrows or the cheekbones. The face can be modeled in this way, the proportions appear even more expressive.

Instant Action

An immediate effect, which, for example, offers express masks or delicately tinted body lotions and anti-wrinkle creams with optical soft focus, which show an effect immediately after application (e.g. “Instant Action Anti-Stress Mask” by Hildegard Braukmann, 30 ml approx. 9 euros).

Mizellenwasser

What is special about this facial toner are the micelles of the same name – a gentle type of surfactant with a special structure: the leaf-shaped molecules have both a “water-loving” (hydrophilic) and a “fat-loving” (lipophilic) end – and absorb excess sebum and dirt like one magnet on. As a result, they are also well tolerated by sensitive skin and the delicate area around the eyes.

Mist

Stands for a delicate mist and is often used for nourishing body fragrances or face sprays (e.g. “Face Mist” with soothing cucumber extracts, Bobbi Brown, 100 ml approx. 28 euros).

Not fat

Describes fat-free care products without oil – such as quickly absorbing body gels or fluids for combination skin (e.g. “Hydra Originel Fluide Non-Gras” from Phytomer, 30 ml approx. 44 euros).

Pre-Shampoo

A clarifying mask, which is applied before the shampoo, is supposed to do the preparatory work for the shampoo – and make the subsequent hair wash even more effective: For example, there are some that quickly remove excess silicone residues and coarse impurities from greasy roots with clay. Others cleanse a flaky scalp of dead cells with fine peeling particles and essential cedar oil in just one minute.

Rejuvenation

The product marked in this way is intended to rejuvenate our appearance. While the word was previously mainly found on smoothing face creams or eye masks, it is now also used on shampoos and hair care sprays (e.g. “Bonacure Q10 + Time Restore Rejuvenating Spray” from Schwarzkopf Professional, 200 ml approx. 9 euros) .

Replenisher

Intensive skin or hair care creams and serums (e.g. “Time to Hydrate Night Replenisher” from Ahava, 50 ml approx. 35 euros), which “replenish” a rough complexion or heavily stressed hair with highly concentrated ingredients . = replenish).

Without rinsing

Often likes hair conditioners or treatments that don’t need to be rinsed out: the ingredients in them are designed to care for all day long – but at the same time are so light that they don’t weigh you down.

Veil

Extra light body lotions, make-up or care sprays that lie on the skin like a delicate veil (French = voile) (e.g. “Voile Galbant Tenseur Buste 417” décolleté care, Maria Galland, 125 ml approx. 34 euros) .

Tanning Mitt

A glove with a particularly soft surface that was specially developed for the even application of self-tanning lotion: It ensures a streak-free result and protects fingers and nails from brownish discolouration (e.g. from Vita Liberata, at Douglas). Wash in warm soapy water after use.

eyelash serum

The transparent gel is applied with a small brush like mascara and is supposed to make the fine hairs sprout more vigorously after a few weeks – for example with the help of ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or caffeine, which stimulate the growth of the eyelash hair root (e.g. “Eyelash Booster Stimulator Serum”, Medipharma Cosmetics, approx. 30 euros). However, some serums also contain a derivative of prostaglandin – a tissue hormone originally used in eye drops to treat glaucoma. It can cause itching and redness and should be avoided if you have sensitive skin.
