Yellow Teeth: Avoid These Mistakes

Do you dream of beautiful, well-groomed and ideally white teeth? Although each of us has different genetic makeup, there are things we can do to prevent yellow teeth. We explain which 3 mistakes you should avoid.

Many people are unhappy with their teeth. In some cases, yellow teeth and dark discoloration can even become a psychological burden for those affected. The good news is that there are things you can do to prevent or counteract tooth discoloration. Above all, proper dental hygiene is the be-all and end-all for healthy and white teeth. Most people know that you should brush your teeth thoroughly in the morning and evening. However, that’s not all – the care of the interdental spaces also plays an important role. Here it is not enough to use a mouthwash after brushing your teeth. Food residues and bacterial plaque collect in the spaces between the teeth, which is why they should be cleaned thoroughly with dental floss or interdental brushes. Without appropriate cleaning, pathogens and tooth decay have an easy time and bad breath can develop. But what other mistakes can you avoid to prevent yellow teeth?

Yellow Teeth: Avoid These 3 Mistakes

1. Drinking the wrong drinks

Do you already know that coffee and black tea stain your teeth? That’s true, but that’s not all. Because there are many other drinks that can promote yellow teeth. In addition to black tea, this also includes green tea, rosehip tea, chamomile tea and rooibos tea – the cause is the tannic acid it contains, which discolours the enamel. Aside from the various types of tea, excessive consumption of sugary soft drinks like cola can also cause yellow teeth, as can tomato or grape juice. And not only that – wine lovers also have to reckon with unsightly discolouration. Contrary to what is often assumed, red wine is even less responsible for this than white wine. This is because the latter dissolves more calcium from the deeper layers of the teeth.

2. Brushing your teeth too often

A lot helps a lot? Not when it comes to brushing your teeth! As already explained, regular dental care is essential for beautiful teeth, but you should not overdo it either. Because the principle that you should brush your teeth after every meal is a misconception. Brushing your teeth more than three times a day will damage your tooth enamel. Damaged tooth enamel can in turn promote discoloration. In order to protect the tooth enamel, you should also wait at best an hour before brushing your teeth after consuming acidic drinks such as juice.

3. Refrain from having your teeth professionally cleaned

Of course, professional teeth cleaning is not exactly cheap at 80 to 120 euros – but the treatment is an investment that is worthwhile if you want to counteract yellow teeth. A professional tooth cleaning should be carried out once or twice a year, because it is not only a good way to prevent yellow teeth, the treatment can also remove discolouration that you cannot get rid of by brushing yourself.
