We are all getting older and increasing age sooner or later becomes noticeable in everyone with the first wrinkles. It is all the more important that we counteract the aging process of the skin with the help of a healthy diet and the right facial care. But what should we bet on when it comes to anti-aging? We spoke to an expert and found out which ingredient is still underestimated.
While skin is still thick and elastic when you are young, collagen fibers become fewer over time and the skin’s elasticity decreases. As a result, it can store less liquid – as a result, our skin becomes drier and loses its elasticity. At what age and how our skin changes is largely determined by our genetic predisposition, but our lifestyle also influences skin aging. In addition to a healthy, nutritious diet, the right skin care can delay the aging process and contribute to a firm, clear complexion. Some active ingredients are particularly important.
We spoke to Valerie Bleeker, Skincare Education Manager at Paula’s Choice Skincare, and asked her about the best antiaging ingredients.
Interview with Scincare expert Valerie Bleeker: “This ingredient is completely underestimated”
awwdogs.com: Which ingredients are essential for anti-aging care?
Without daily sun protection, even the best anti-aging ingredients have little chance of developing their full effect, because the sun is the main cause of premature skin aging in 80% of cases. In addition to wrinkles and lines, this also includes pigmentation and enlarged pores. That’s why sun protection is the most important step in any skin care routine – not just for anti-aging purposes.
awwdogs.com: Are there helpful ingredients that are still underestimated?
Ceramides are the building blocks of our outermost skin layer, which prevent moisture loss and prevent environmental damage. With age, however, their proportion decreases, so that our skin loses more moisture and becomes more susceptible to environmental influences. The result: reddened, dry and rough skin that is more easily irritated and forms wrinkles. Ceramide-enriched skin care can significantly reduce this process and at the same time strengthen the skin’s barrier function.
awwdogs.com: Which active ingredients should women use from the age of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60?
Age is not a skin type, since our skin ages very individually and at different rates. Regardless of whether you are 20, 40 or 60, every woman can benefit from so-called “anti-aging” active ingredients. Vitamin C, niacinamide, glycolic acid and tranexamic acid, for example, help with skin discolouration. On the other hand, if you want to tighten the skin and reduce lines and wrinkles, we recommend retinol and peptides. Salicylic acid and azelaic acid can also help with blemishes.
