3G rule: what you need to know

Vaccinated, tested, or recovered – the 3G rule applies immediately. If you want to go to a restaurant, gym or hairdresser, you need appropriate proof.

As of today, the 3G rule applies: Anyone meeting in publicly accessible indoor spaces must be vaccinated, recovered or tested. So if you want to go to the hairdresser, the restaurant (indoor area), the gym or attend events from today, you have to provide proof. The 3G rule also applies to visits to hospitals, retirement and nursing homes and facilities for the disabled. A negative rapid antigen test must not be older than 24 hours, a PCR test no older than 48 hours. Children up to the age of 6 and students are exempt from the rule. The federal and state governments want to use the 3G rule to avoid a further increase in the number of infections – and provide incentives for vaccination. The number of infections has been rising continuously for weeks. “We will have fewer infections the more people are vaccinated,” said Chancellor Angela Merkel. The 3G rule may suspend all or part of counties that are stable below 35 new infections per 100.

Paid corona tests from October

From October 11th, the corona citizen tests for unvaccinated people will be subject to a fee . There are still free tests for people who cannot be vaccinated or for whom there is no general vaccination recommendation. This includes pregnant womenor children under the age of 12. Merkel said: “Since we can basically already offer every citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany a comprehensive range of vaccinations, we will end the free citizen tests for everyone with effect from October 11.” Future contact or exit restrictions for vaccinated people and those who have recovered excludes Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU). Keeping your distance and wearing a mask when shopping and on public transport still applies to everyone – whether vaccinated, recovered or tested.

As the first federal state: 2G rule in Hamburg

The tightened 2G rule will apply in Hamburg from August 28 as the only federal state to date . Accordingly, relaxed rules only come into force in the Hanseatic city for those who have recovered and those who have been vaccinated. With the 2G rule, restaurateurs or concert organizers can refuse access to unvaccinated people despite a negative corona test – however, it is up to you to decide who you want as customers and who not.

The Hamburg Senate wants to use the 2G rule to prevent another lockdown and offer restaurateurs and event organizers general planning security. “The vaccinated and those who have recovered do not play a significant role in the infection process,” said Mayor Peter Tschentscher at the press conference. It is not yet clear whether other federal states will follow suit or whether there will be a nationwide 2G regulation.
